About the Author
Donna Wyland is an award-winning author of fiction, nonfiction, and picture books. Her most recent gift book, Last Best Year – A Short Guide to a Grateful Life – is a Golden Scroll Award Winner, and her picture books, ‘Twas the Night Before Jesus and Psalms in Rhyme for Little Hearts were both Readers’ Choice Award Finalists.‘Twas the Night Before Jesus also won the Illumination Award Silver Medal and Psalms in Rhyme for Little Hearts was the Christian Indie Award winner for picture books.
Though she began a career in financial planning, God interrupted those plans and called her to write more than twenty years ago. Donna responded, “Yes, Lord,” and today has numerous books, essays, and blogs attributed to her name.
In the future, Donna hopes to continue writing guided journals to encourage and inspire people’s faith and confidence in God and themselves. As a Certified Christian Life Coach, Donna learned the value of asking powerful questions. Through her guided journals she hopes to lead readers to greater clarity, peace, and purpose as they read, consider, and reply to the questions asked.
Donna is grateful for her husband, four grown daughters, sons-in-law, and grandchildren. She and her husband currently live in Southwest Florida, but her passion for travel frequently takes her to other states and countries around the world. Only God knows where she will live in five years. Thankfully she has a husband who says he will follow her wherever she goes.

What would you change in your life if you could? Scientific and faith-based research prove that gratitude is the key! 5 minutes a day/7 days a week for 7 weeks could change your life. Let today be the day your new life begins!
This journal was inspired by God and written as a result of many personal losses in my life. As I tried to move toward healing, I felt like I was still walking under a dark cloud each day, faking happiness and joy as I went about my responsibilities as a wife, mother, and grandmother. I was still hurting and desperately wanted to know why. That’s when I did a deep dive on the topic of gratitude and discovered its tremendous power to heal.
I pray that this journal becomes a legacy of readers’ journeys to joy, emotional and physical health, peace, and a thankful way of life. God knows you and sees you. He is excited to hear your praise and watch you grow into a gratitude-filled man or woman of God who lights the world on fire simply by being your wonderful, beautiful, joyful self.
Author Interview
- What is your favorite genre of books? Why?
I may be the exception, but I love all genres of books and generally have more than one I am reading at the same time. I currently am in the middle of several nonfiction books on joy, gratitude, and surrender; while I have a novel next to the bed that I read a couple of chapters in each night. Gift books are a love of mine too. All books are beautiful to me.
- How has your life experience helped in your writing journey?
My life experience was integral to writing A Guided Gratitude Journal as I share many snippets of my personal life in it before asking readers questions about their own experiences. My goal is for readers to go deeper into their own healing journey to consider where they’ve been and the direction they feel God calling them to go. By the end of the journal, readers should have greater clarity regarding their destiny and purpose.
- Where do you find your greatest inspiration?
I am generally most inspired after spending time with the Lord in Bible reading, devotional reading, praise, and prayer. It’s in the quiet moments of reflection after that time that God stirs within my spirit ideas for books or sometimes even gives me an outline or chapter summary. Walking in nature or just staring out the window in silence often prepares me to hear from the Lord as well. When I am writing some books that are more fun, I find inspiration in comedy series and laughter with friends. Some of my children’s poems are hilarious and they are the result of being with others who love to laugh.
- Do you have extensive outlines when writing or do you write a book as you go?
I am what is lovingly referred to in publishing as a ‘pantser.’ I let the story write itself with inspiration from Holy Spirit. When I’m writing a longer work like a novel or full-length nonfiction book like A Guided Gratitude Journal, I often go to the beach or the mountains to have time alone to focus and write day and night. I get the most work done on those small trips by myself and even find inspiration on beach walks or hikes through the woods.
- What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
It’s funny you ask. My desk looks like a mess to outsiders, but to me, it is covered in files and manuscripts that I’m working on. Those ‘creative stacks’ actually motivate and keep me inspired as I write. Every now and then, I need to remove most of them if I’m struggling with writer’s block, but most of the time I find the stacks of files and papers comforting. Writer’s block, to me, is easily overcome by a walk, a short break to read, or a phone call to a friend who makes me laugh.
