The Story Behind the Story

Writing fiction has always felt like opening my window and inviting readers to look out at the world with me. Over the years, I’ve stumbled into countless moments that later became stories—and A Heart on Consignment is one of those grace-filled accidents.

This book began with a series of God winks. A scheduled photoshoot led me to a tucked-away Amish consignment shop in Kentucky. After making my purchase, an experience that sparked a story of its own, I left carrying more than a dress. I carried the generosity of the owners and the quiet power of their story. I’ve always believed everyone has a story, and I’ve learned to be a good listener.

A year later, during one of my many visits to Baltic, Ohio, I found myself unexpectedly stepping into a massive Amish volleyball tournament. It was a charity event raising funds for a local child with a heart condition and a man awaiting a transplant. That evening, a simple conversation with a passerby, who would later become a dear friend and fellow writer, opened doors to learning even more about Amish and Mennonite ministries, fundraisers, and community outreach.

Since then, I’ve attended countless charitable events, witnessing firsthand the generosity woven into Amish life. From organizations like Samaritan’s Purse, Special Hearts Workshop, Disaster Aid Ohio, and CAM, to tournaments of every kind—volleyball, pickleball, softball, even ping pong—each experience planted another seed that eventually grew into this novel.

What began as a frantic search for a dress became a tapestry of God-ordained moments. Each step guided me toward telling the story of a young woman whose courage, compassion, and steadfast heart shine brightest in the face of disaster.

I invite you to join me on this journey from Kentucky to Havenlee, Indiana, as Seth and Salina search for forgiveness, hope, and love. May their story touch your heart as much as the journey touched mine.

Author Interview

  • Are you a one project at a time author or do you have multiple projects going at once? I try to focus on one project at a time, but contracts and schedules sometimes overlap and my dedication has to be shared between projects. As a mother of 5, I’ve learned a long time ago to just keep on keeping on until the job is done. I may sometimes put the wrong name in the wrong story, but God has blessed us busy writers with fabulous editors.
  • How has your life experience helped in your writing journey? I’ve been writing since I was very small, but I was forty-four before I gave it my full attention. I believe in family first, so raising my children was important to me. That said, I do believe God spoke that belief in my heart all those years ago, and now, as an older, wiser woman, I feel my writing reflects experience and knowledge that I would not have had at a younger age.
  • What is the funniest thing to happen in the process of writing one of your books? There are a few laugh-out-loud moments in my writing journey, but the one that stands tallest was the day before I was ready to turn in my finished manuscript for Courting An Amish Bishop. I was on my way to a book signing when suddenly a detail about the book drew concern to me. I wasn’t sure if I wrote correctly about a situation. I stopped by the local bishop’s work and to my surprise, he shut down his cabinet shop equipment and listened to my concerns, they were romance related by-the-way, and without laughing, he answered all my questions. Thankfully I had the time to make all the changes, but even though he was kind enough to help, his wife, son-in-law, and other two employees did not keep a straight face and did get a good laugh at my abrupt visit.
  • How do you relax after a long day of writing? II love to cook, and find it a great way to unwind after a long writing session. Plus, I have two labradors, Ms. Ellie and Boone, and after supper each evening, we enjoy a nice hike and a few games of fetch.
  • Where do you find your greatest inspiration? Wherever I am. Every day life, even the most ordinary of days, is filled with little noticeable impressions. I’m a bit of a people watcher, but I also pay close mind to my surroundings. You only have to be observant to see what God is pointing his finger at.
  • Do you have extensive outlines when writing or do you write a book as you go? My writing process is not normal. First, I write on paper when drafting a novel, but even more interesting is that I often spend a couple of days making character lists and getting to know my characters first. Then I write the full draft, without an outline. I’m not very good at following the outlines I pitch to publishers, but so far, I have had no complaints.
