Author: Samantha Roman

Genre: Christian YA

Fifteen-year-old Candy Chancellor must choose between holding onto yesterday’s pain or the hope of tomorrow. When her father is tragically killed weeks before her baby brother is expected, Candy is tossed from being a happy home schooled girl to the new girl at Christian school- with a seat in front of her new best enemy. Now that her grieving mother is unable to provide any true support, Candy relies on the help of two of her new friends from school, an old friend of the family, and tries to find God in the midst of it all.

Real estate tycoon Leslie Chancellor must make a choice between life or death and this time she doesn’t have her husband to help her. When Robert Chancellor is tragically killed, Leslie spirals into a deep darkness she can’t escape. Now that Candy is chasing her dreams of being a super star, Leslie must rely on an old family friend, a kind colleague, and new friend she didn’t plan on meeting.

Author Interview

  • Are you a one project at a time author or do you have multiple projects going at once?

I always have more than one project going at the same time! To me, it keeps life interesting, because you can explore other parts of different character’s lives. Asking questions like, what if there were a prequel? What was Leslie like before the accident? What was Candy like? How do we know what kind of husband Rob was? And there is a prequel, Duets. The sequel to Butterflies is expected in October, 2025! (What happens next is the biggest question, right?)

  • How has your life experience helped in your writing journey?

I think God has given me the capacity to show more empathy. When the book was first written, Leslie was a chain smoker. She’s always been a smoker. Revisiting the book years later, I realized she smokes to calm her nerves. Anxiety exists for Christians too. Does Leslie handle it the right way at first? Of course not, but having dealt with health challenges personally, I can empathize with Leslie because putting Band-aids over problems that need surgical repair is what a lot of us do, but it doesn’t work. We have to ultimately give them to the Great Physician and let Him heal us. And He may use doctors, medications, pastors, or anything He finds acceptable to heal you and bring you closer to Him.

  • Who is your favorite author? Why?

Probably Robin Jones Gunn. Her stories have blessed my heart since I was fourteen and they are still a blessing to this day. As of writing this, I’m looking forward to Gelato in the Villa by her. Gunn has always encouraged future writers, offered signed copies, given “life updates”, and has engaged with her fans on social media, which to me, says a lot about a person. Her books that include her real-life stories from the past are just as amazing as her fictional stories as well. But having read a gazillion of her books, including her portion in the multi-author book A Novel Idea,  I make sure to engage with readers on social media now too and encourage fellow writers in my life as well. I sign books when I have the opportunity, but I’m not sure they’re worth that much right now!

  • Do you have extensive outlines when writing or do you write a book as you go?

I have loosely (and I mean loosely) outlined, but I typically write as I go.

  • What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

Quiet, lol. I can’t write with a lot of noise around me.
