What is the purpose behind the series “Seeing the Old Testament in the Epistles”?

It seems that even our Christian publications run in cycles. I kept seeing books and hearing teachings about how the Bible is one story, not two different ones. There is not God of wrath versus God of grace, or Old v New Testament, understanding of who God is and what his purpose with us is. God is the same from Genesis to Revelation, he is full of mercy and love, caring and forgiving, etc. This has sometimes been an idea that rarely applied to the Old Testament, yet if God is the same, I should find the threads that connect the old and new covenant understandings of who God is and his purpose for me.

These studies seek to view the New Testament with the Old Testament alongside it. The challenge in understanding the letters, or epistles, of the New Testament is understanding what the hearers of the letter would have already known or understood. The writers reveal that themselves, so we don’t have to guess. This series seeks to guide people in seeing what the epistle writers were saying through the Old Testament references so that we too may grow personally and spiritually in Christ as the original readers did. This approach helps participants see the Bible as a cohesive story and grow in their understanding of God’s purpose for their lives.
