About the Author

As an award-winning author and blogger, I enjoy writing stories that deepen our relationship with God. My passions include prayer, travel, and mission work.

I was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. My names include wife, mom, grandmother, and child of God. I learned to trust the Lord in all circumstances, even after the death of my son many years ago. Throughout the years, God’s calling led me down many paths, like starting a charity for orphans in other countries and becoming a writer.

How I Started Writing

My writing career started differently than most. I never expected to write professionally. After many years of short-term mission work, I felt God nudging me to write stories from the mission field. I laughed because I thought I was too old and I was not a writer. The nudge would not go away. So, I asked God to speak through my husband if this was really Him and not my imagination. I told none of this to my husband. About a month later, Bill and I sat watching TV, and he looked over at me and asked how my book was coming along? I cried, and he asked what was happening and I told Bill the story, and he responded, “I guess you’re writing a book.”

I wrote my first book called Turning Mountains into Molehills. The book is a memoir of my experiences during those mission trips. I soon learned that there is a lot more than just putting the words on the pages. The hardest part came with the editing process, something I had not expected. As I reread my words over and over, I wanted to give up because it sounded dreadful. But I kept plugging away at the manuscript until it felt ready to submit to a publisher.

My book, Gypsy for God, came about for several reasons. I love to travel and I wanted to try writing a fiction novel, so I thought it would be fun to combine those two items. And since I did not start my writing career until I was in my fifties, I also wanted to show others it is never too late to try something new and we are never too old to be used by God to accomplish His purposes.

This book offers hope to those readers seeking a godly purpose for their lives. A Gypsy for God shows how anyone can transform their lives and their world regardless of their situation or age. We are never too old or too for God to do incredible things for us and through us. And, in these days of increasing turmoil, I think hope is one of our most important messages we can share with the world. Writing took me on an incredible journey and I hope it does not end soon.

Author Interview

  • How do you overcome writer’s block? Do you have any advice for others in finding their process to overcome it?

To overcome writer’s block, I will first try stepping away from the WIP. I might work on something else for a bit or I might go read something to relax myself. Spending time in nature also helps me refocus so I might go on a walk in a park. As I walk, I will pray to God to guide me in my writing and help me find the words. Even when I’m not challenged with writer’s block, I say the same prayer daily to keep my work centered. The main thing is not to give up.

  • Do you read the genre you write? Why or why not?

Yes, I do read Christian contemporary fiction. I really enjoy a good, clean book. I don’t want to worry about skipping sections. The books I enjoy the most contain a good story without unnecessary sex or foul language. When I read, I want to escape to a safe, healthy world that uplifts my spirit.

  • How did you come up with the title for your book?

I don’t have too much problems with titles. In fact, I usually pick a working title first because it gives me a theme to focus on as I write. But, I also understand that the publishers might decide on a different title, so I keep that in mind. With Gypsy for God, I wanted the title to convey the idea of traveling as my main character searched for her godly purpose. Some have criticized the title because of the negative press around gypsies, but I like my title and so did the publisher, so it stuck.

  • What’s your favorite writing snack, drink, and/or music?

It depends on the time of day that I’m writing. If I write in the morning, a cup of coffee is within reach. If I write in the afternoon, then it will be a cup of tea. For snacks, I’m careful so that it is not something that will interfere with the typing, like Cheetos. Something that is not too messy on the fingers so I like some cut up vegetables. My favorite snack when I’m not writing is always chocolate. I don’t listen to music when I write because I find it distracting.

  • What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

I heard something a few years ago at a Christian writer’s conference. Steve Laube said, “The world will be different tomorrow because of the words you write today.” That really stuck with me. I write with the purpose of sharing my faith, wither in fiction, non-fiction or children’s books. Just because the process in hard or overwhelming, we should never give up on sharing our message. Our words can change lives. I also have a sticker on my laptop that reads, “impacting lives for God’s glory.” So I keep that as my focus when I write. We may not be the greatest writers in the world. We may never become a best seller but our words can impact others, so keep writing.
