How would you like to get a personal letter from someone? Most people like real mail, especially if its from a person who truly cares about you. What if that letter not only shared their affection but it revealed the answers to some of life’s most profound questions? God has written you such a letter, the Bible! Actually, the Bible is a collection of all God’s written messages to you.
This fact was impressed on me as I read the New Testament book of Hebrews. It opens with a bold statement. God had given messages to humanity in ancient times through prophets and angels. Finally, God sent Jesus, the Ultimate Messenger with the ultimate message that is vital for every person.
This captured my attention and made me wonder how the previous messages in the Bible led up to Jesus and His message? Researching that question took me on an exciting journey of discovery, encouragement, and warning in God’s Word. The result is my book, Have You Heard from God Lately? It summarizes major Bible themes to help you navigate the amazing Book. I hope it inspires you to open God’s letter and realize just how much He cares for you!
Author Interview
- What is your favorite genre of books? Why?
I enjoy books about history, both fiction and non-fiction. I’ve been interested in history since I was a kid. That probably came from hearing about great events of the past as recorded in the Bible. I remember being fascinated by Daniel’s visions of four great ancient empires and then learning that they were real and his descriptions were 100% accurate. I also gain perspective and am challenged by reading about how people lived in the past and the obstacles they had to overcome. It makes me really appreciate our freedoms and conveniences!
- Are you a one project at a time author or do you have multiple projects going at once?
I have multiple book ideas, but focus on one at a time. That’s mainly because I’m still working and don’t have time to concentrate on multiple projects. In fact, I typically write in 20-30 minute increments early in the morning before “life” gets in the way.
- How has your life experience helped in your writing journey?
I grew up listening to some wonderful Bible teachers on a Christian radio station. As a young person, I did not realize the regular and systematic sermons and talks were giving me a solid working knowledge of the Bible. That was amplified when a friend challenged me in my 20s to read through the Bible over and over. Multiple readings gave me a familiarity with verses, passages, and topics that were critical to writing Bible based books. I was constantly amazed that God regularly brought Bible verses to mind that were needed to prove or disprove arguments in Have You Heard from God Lately? Of course, the disproven were corrected to match what the Bible said. So, I feel very blessed to have written a book that strives to accurately convey God’s Bible messages in a format that is easily understood to modern readers.
- Where do you find your greatest inspiration?
My greatest writing inspiration comes from my favorite book, the Bible. Both of my books came from a new look at familiar Bible passages which made me realize, if I’d missed something, others may have as well. I enjoy reading and studying the Bible for spiritual growth but also because it is an amazing book that speaks to many areas of life. Discovering or reviewing God’s messages or themes in the Bible makes me want to share the news, and in this case, write a book!
- Do you have extensive outlines when writing or do you write a book as you go?
My writing process begins with an idea that I turn into a broad outline. That serves as my plan for research and writing. As I investigate the themes on my outline, I go with the flow of what I discover in writing my rough draft. If I come up with new ideas I’ll adjust the framework. I am detail oriented when it comes to writing, but I’ve found if I put too many details in my outline, they turn into paragraphs. So, I try to stick with the high-level plan.
- What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?
The thing I need most is quiet. It takes a while to get into my writing zone and once I’m there, I do not want to come out. However, when someone calls or something around the house needs attention, I feel frustrated because my creativity bubble is burst and I’ll have to take extra time to get back into the zone once the interruption is past. For me silence is really golden when it comes to writing.
