He realized his mother was trying to heal the wounds of the challenging year they had just endured. But his initial enthusiasm was quickly overshadowed by a deep-seated discontent. Nothing brought him joy anymore. All he did was pounce at anyone who so much as looked at him the wrong way.
Stefan observed the passing fields in contemplative silence as the train sped on. No one said a word. The landscape gradually transformed, the flatness giving way to gentle, rolling hills. An urban sprawl emerged with a multitude of apartment buildings, each with its own unique character. Some were vibrant and modern, their colors a stark contrast to the grayness of older structures that grabbed Stefan’s attention for all the wrong reasons.
Bumper-to-bumper traffic clogged the streets. The further they went, the older and more picturesque the architecture became, not like modern Warsaw where they had just spent a few days.
Julia, her face pressed against the window, whispered in awe, “So this is where our great-great-great-grandmother Anna Maria was born.” The weight of their family’s history and the discovery of their roots hung in the air, filling the compartment with a sense of reverence and curiosity.

About the Author
Carol’s passion is to write exciting stories that encourage, inspire, and boost the reader’s faith, possibly because she has always felt like an outsider. She was born in North Africa to American parents and grew up in France. At age 15, her family’s abrupt move to Philadelphia resulted in a rough transition to American life.
After graduating from Penn State, Carol joined the Army in search of adventure. She was stationed in exotic—for her—locations like California, Arizona, and Texas.
Since then, Carol has lived in Krakow, Poland, where she teaches English and organizes language camps. She also writes a blog on faith-related topics.
Carol enjoys watching or reading a good murder mystery and getting nervous while watching NFL games.
