Why I Wrote How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month
By Susan U. Neal, RN, MBA, MHS
When I first became an author, I had no idea how much marketing it would take to get my book into readers’ hands. Like many writers, I thought my job ended when I typed “The End.” But I quickly realized that if I truly wanted to reach people with the message God gave me, I needed to learn how to market that message effectively.
Over the years, I discovered what actually works. My book 7 Steps to Get Off Sugar and Carbohydrates has sold over 30,000 copies. In 2022, I reached a personal milestone: my overall Amazon author rank was 4,400. That placed me in the top 1 percent of all Amazon authors. As an award-winning, best-selling author and certified writer coach, I’ve gained a great deal of insight into what works—and what doesn’t—when it comes to book marketing. And I wanted to share those marketing secrets with you.
That’s why I wrote How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month. I want to equip Christian authors with the tools and strategies they need—not only to sell more books but to fulfill their divine calling. This isn’t just about numbers. It’s about spreading the message God gave you and watching Him multiply its impact.
Author Interview
- Are you a one project at a time author or do you have multiple projects going at once?
I usually have multiple projects going at once, but only one of them is a book. I like to write one book at a time, focus on it, and complete it before I start another book. However, while I may be writing one book, I’m also planning marketing strategies, mentoring other authors, or preparing for teaching at writer conference. I enjoy the variety, and I rely on prayer and organization to keep everything moving forward with purpose.
I am the CEO of Christian Indie Publishing Association (CIPA), the Christian Authors Network (CAN), the Christian Indie Awards, CAN Marketing Awards, and Blue Lake Christian Writers Conference. Through these organizations, I help Christian authors publish professionally, market effectively, and expand their reach to fulfill their God-given calling. I can make a greater impact for the kingdom of God by helping authors successfully market their books than by publishing just one book of my own each year.
Now, with my book How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month, I put the tools, strategies, and knowledge I’ve gained into the hands of other authors who feel called to share their God-given message. This book is more than just a guide to marketing—it’s a practical resource built on real-life experience that walks authors through the steps to expand their reach, grow their audience, and fulfill their ministry through publishing.
- How has your life experience helped in your writing journey?
My book marketing experience has been instrumental in shaping both my writing journey and the creation of How to Sell 1,000 Books a Month. As I navigated the challenges of promoting my earlier books, I discovered what truly works—from building an email list to running successful Amazon ads and securing media interviews. Each campaign taught me valuable lessons that I wished I had known at the start. With every success and setback, I gained insights that not only helped me sell over 40,000 copies of one book but also equipped me to help others do the same. This experience became the foundation for this new book, which now serves as a guide to help fellow Christian authors avoid costly mistakes and find success faster.
- What is a surprising thing to happen after writing one of your books?
After I had written the children’s picture book, Eat God’s Food: A Kid’s Guide to Healthy Eating, I visited a friend who introduced me to her five-year-old granddaughter. My friend told her, “This is the author of your favorite book.” The little girl immediately opened the book to the page with a playground and a girl whose body was shaped like a strawberry. She giggled and said how funny it was that the girl looked like a strawberry.
I was amazed at how well she knew the book. Years later, she can still tell you which foods God made, and which ones were made by food manufacturers—and she chooses to eat a healthy diet.
- How do you relax after a long day of writing?
I created a healthy habits check list and at the end of each day I check off what I’ve done to improve my physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. First, I start my day with reading my Bible study and getting on my mat to stretch at the same time. These activities are beneficial for my spiritual and physical health, and I get two things accomplished at once!
Mid-morning I take a break too walk in the woods at my home or lift some weights. I break up my writing by standing while reading instead of sitting all the time. At the end of an especially taxing day, I like to sit by my pool and soak up some vitamin D from the sun and swim laps. It really takes my stress away when I exercise.
- Where do you find your greatest inspiration?
In the morning after reading my Bible study, I like to meditate with the Lord. I breathe deeply, still my mind, and simply rest in his presence. During this time, thoughts often come to me—ideas and insights I never would have dreamed on my own.
This time provides an opportunity for my mind to let go of distractions and tune into the gentle whisper of God’s voice. I write down these ideas, which I call downloads from the Lord. These divine insights help me be a better person and give me deeper insight into my writing.
