About the Author

Award-winning author and speaker Debbi Migit lives in central Illinois, surrounded by pumpkin patches and cornfields. Her first book, Child of Promise, is the true love story of a family formed through adoption. After ten years of infertility, Debbi and her husband Phil were just months from adopting when God said, “Not this way.” Child of Promise is the story of audacious faith resulting in multiple miracles. It encourages readers to remember their own promises and believe again.

Debbi has won multiple awards and contests, writing stories that are filled with faith and hope. She loves to share personal anecdotes about God’s faithfulness, infusing her talks with authenticity and humor. Debbi and Phil are the adoptive parents of Alex, Ethan, and Kate. The God-ordained spacing of their children offered the unique opportunity to parent a teen and two toddlers–at the same time. This is the season Debbi fondly calls the TNT years!

Debbi’s hobbies include reading, writing, and avoiding arithmetic. Her favorite color is turquoise, and she collects Trixie Belden books and typewriters. If playing Candy Crush was a paying gig, she would be rich.

Debbi’s Justice, Montana series begins with September Shadows, released in February, 2021. After the mysterious death of their parents, Jess Thomas and her sisters are determined to stay together and make a new life for themselves, which includes faith-testing danger, adventure, and romance.

October Outlaw was released in the fall of 2021, followed by November Knight in November 2023.

The series will conclude with December Dreams, and January Justice in 2025

Author Interview

  • What is your favorite genre of books? Why?

That’s like asking a mother to name her favorite child! LOL. It honestly depends on my mood. I’ve certainly read more romance than any other genre, but I also really appreciate a good thriller. I read Alistair MacLean’s Golden Gate when I was sixteen and I’ve been on the hunt for quality thrillers ever since. Adding some romance makes it even more special. Put our heroes in the woods with a rogue bear, or strand them in the South American jungle with, well, rogues and I’m here for it!

  • Are you a one project at a time author or do you have multiple projects going at once?

When I’m writing a book I only focus on one story at a time. I guess I worry my characters will get jealous if I leave them hanging to focus on someone else. There are times when an idea might skitter across my brain, and I’m tempted to trip after it. But in the background, I hear my hero yelling, “Hey! Where are you going? I’m about to be thrown out of a plane without a parachute. Get back here!”  So yeah, I try to stay focused.

  • What is the funniest thing to happen in the process of writing one of your books?

One of the best things about a writer’s conference is having the opportunity to meet with publishers and agents to pitch your book. You have fifteen minutes to share your project using a ‘one-sheet’ which gives a brief overview of your book. In 2019 I traveled to the Kentucky Christian Writer’s Conference. As I drove, I glanced over at my passenger seat where I had placed two of these sheets. One project was for a devotional and the other sheet described the Justice, Montana series.

I was so torn because while I wanted to write the fiction series, I felt like I should write the devotional book because somehow it was more ‘spiritual’. I knew I needed to focus on one project that weekend, so I had to decide soon. I started talking out loud, telling God about my dilemma. He was shocked LOL We continued this conversation for several minutes then I said, “Ok God, please just tell me what to do. Give me a sign!”

I looked up just at that moment to see a huge billboard that said, “MONTANA”! The small print told me it was an advertisement for a steakhouse, but I had my answer. That weekend I sold September Shadows, the first book in my Justice, Montana series.

  • Do you have extensive outlines when writing or do you write a book as you go?

Outlines make me break out in hives. Or at least they used to. I discovered early on that if you write a series, you can’t be a pantser, which is writer speak for writing by the seat of your pants. *So far, my Justice, Montana books occur in consecutive months in the same year. Not only that, I decided to make it really challenging so each chapter tells the day and time. I refused to use a traditional outline, so I printed out a blank timeline that I found on a homeschool site. Then I wrote the day/time above each box and added a brief description of what would happen in that chapter. Some chapters carried over to the next box, so I couldn’t use an actual calendar. I also had to make sure the dates matched up as I moved to the next book. “Why?” you ask. Because writing five books in a series isn’t challenging enough. I had to add math.

*spoiler alert

  • What do you need in your writing space to help you stay focused?

Pepsi. Chocolate. My fan and heater, often running at the same time. My phone muted. My desk faces a beautiful painting of a snow-covered mountain and trees. A FAKE bearskin hangs on the wall beside it and a wooden sign declares, “Into the woods we go”. I may actually be in Illinois, but in my little corner of the world I’m in the mountains of Montana.
