About the Author

David Reid Brown is a retired Navy Chaplain and currently serves as a high school Government, Bible, and Art teacher at Grace Christian School in Mechanicsville, VA. He has authored nine books: Spirit Soundings: A Chaplain’s Journal of Life at Sea (three volumes), Lost Summer, and Psalms from The Sea (four volumes), and a book of poetry, Sophia’s Songs. These inspirational stories were born out of his global seafaring experiences, spanning twenty-one years of peace, war, and three overseas deployments as well as his service as a Christian educator.

Did you know? The art on the front cover of my book, OPERATIONS, was designed and created by one of my Ninth Grade Art Students. Yes, it’s true. I recognized that this young artist had the technical skill and artistic flair to create the unique cover art required for this book when he was just in the sixth grade!

FOR OVER TWENTY-ONE YEARS, I have had the distinct privilege of serving thousands of sailors, Marines, and their families across the nation, upon every major ocean, as well as overseas. I am most proud to have shared a common bond of service, sacrifice, and devotion. OPERATIONS is my patriotic tribute to them.

Author Interview

Are you a one-project-at-a-time author, or do you have multiple projects going at once?

First, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to share my insights on your blog.

I am a multiple-project author for two reasons: God always gives me several themes/ topics to work on at the same time, and having multiple projects is a good way to prevent writer’s block.

How has your life experience helped in your writing journey?

My life experience is the foundation for all my writing, particularly the experiences that I had serving as a U.S. Navy Chaplain for twenty-one years. Although my writing journey has several different genres, from non-fiction to poetry, I find that God uses all my education, knowledge, training, married life, and global seafaring experiences in my writing.

How do you relax after a long day of writing?

When I am done writing for the day, I usually do something completely unrelated, such as spending quality time with my wife, watching a movie, or going to the gym to work out. I find activities that differ from writing to be the best way to relax.

Where do you find your greatest inspiration?

God is the one who inspires me to write everything that I have ever published. Now, the best time of the day to receive inspiration is between 3:30 am and 6:00 am, when everyone in my house is still asleep, the neighborhood is quiet, and there’s not much car traffic on the streets. This is the time that I can clearly hear the Lord speak to me without much interference.

Do you have extensive outlines when writing, or do you write a book as you go?

I work from a basic outline when I am writing, and I leave just enough room to be flexible to the leading of the Holy Spirit to “fill in the blanks.” So, it is a both-and proposition for me whenever I sit down to write.
