More from Donna
“More than 30 years ago I discovered the meaning of the Book of Psalms. Whether I was struggling or celebrating, God led me to individual psalms that encouraged and comforted me and gave me the strength to persevere. It is my heart’s desire to see children learn the power and peace of the psalms early in life so they, too, will turn to God’s Word when they need hope and comfort, or they are searching for the right words to praise Him for His blessings and favor. This book of rhyming psalms protects the biblical meaning of each psalm while putting the message in a child’s vocabulary with rhyme to help them remember.”
Author Interview
- How do you overcome writer’s block? Do you have any advice for others in finding their process to overcome it?
I find that the best way for me to overcome Writer’s Block is to ask God for direction and then begin to write. The words aren’t always in perfect order, but God is always faithful. Every now and then, I also find it helpful to read a few pages in a book of the same genre as I am writing in. It helps to prime my creative pump and usually inspires me to put words on the page.
- How did you come up with the title for your book?
Titles are fun for me to play with. I love alliteration, so I usually begin by speed writing any potential titles that come to mind no matter how silly they sound. It is usually easy to go back and eliminate the ones I don’t want to use. I pray about it and sometimes ask fellow authors or publishers what they think before I make a final decision. Ultimately the publisher gets the final say. Psalms in Rhyme for Little Hearts was the title I sensed God giving me when I first began to write the psalms in rhyme.
- What’s your favorite writing snack, drink, and/or music?
Iced coffee is a must. My taste buds are very happy when my pink thermos is filled and ready to use. I used to sing on a worship team at church, so listening to music while I write doesn’t work because I want to sing along. As far as snacks go, I cannot confirm or deny the existence of a small wood box filled with Hershey’s Kisses that sits on a shelf near my writing desk. I may or may not dip into it when my brain needs a sugar fix. I will never tell. Lol
- How did publishing your first book change your writing process?
I believe that with each book I learn and grow. When I look back at the first book I published through a private foundation and gifted to thousands of children around the world, I am grateful and humbled as it was a story that God imparted to me on vacation as I sat by a hotel pool. Since then, my writing process continues to be led by God; but as my experience grows, I understand more fully the craft of writing – how to write in perfect rhyme and create a compelling story. I am definitely more accepting of the time-consuming process and numerous edits that helps a manuscript become the best book it can possibly be.
- Is your writing space pristine or organized chaos?
My husband and I moved to Florida seven months ago to help my 95-year-old father-in-law, and there is still one “mystery box” sitting outside my office that has not been unpacked. That said, I have managed to go through every other box, and I can miraculously tell you exactly where a particular writing file is whether that’s at the bottom of a basket or in the filing cabinet. I guess that means my writing space is primarily organized chaos though the filing cabinet and shelves that display my published books and awards are pristine.
