Secrets Come in Every Shade

After the introduction of Yellow magic in a society accustomed to only Red and Blue magic, the world inside the barrier has become more complicated than anyone imagined. Ava, Elm, and the former students of Prism navigate life in hiding. They face discord, secrets, betrayal, and danger that looms ever closer as the Benefactors narrow in on their hideaway.

Ava is determined to keep everyone protected, even at the cost of her own safety. She explores dangerous aspects of her new Mentalist abilities—against Elm’s dire warnings.

Tensions escalate when a new visitor arrives claiming to know a way out of the barrier. While this may be the only way to escape the Benefactors, what awaits them on the outside? Will they gain allies or make an entirely new set of enemies?

About the Author

Ashley Bustamante has created stories from the moment she could scribble and staple sheets of paper together. She simply cannot recall a time when writing was not a force in her life. When not running through lines of dialogue in her mind, she enjoys taking photographs and spending time with her husband, three children, and any furry, feathered, or scaly creature she can find.

More from Ashley

When I originally wrote Vivid, book one in The Color Theory series, I wasn’t sure if the story would continue. But it had to, didn’t it? Without spoiling anything, Vivid ends in a place where things are really just beginning, and that’s where Radiant takes the stage. What does coming together really look like? What does it take for a group of diverse people to unite? Radiant explores the strength that grows from working together and overcoming differences. It doesn’t come naturally to everyone, and our characters have a lot to learn. I hope you’ll enjoy Radiant!

Author Interview

  • Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

I do hear from readers often, which is always a lovely surprise. First off it’s usually to say how much they love the books (or more specifically, how much they love Elm!). I’ve had a number of readers say there were things they related to or that it helped them escape during a hard time. One reader recently wrote me to say they’re going through one of the hardest challenges of their life and Vivid helped them through it, so that was really touching. Having a positive impact on readers is what makes this so rewarding.

  • How did you come up with the title for your book?

A lot of back and forth with the great mind of Steve Laube. 😊 Vivid was originally titled Color Theory. That became the series title and then Steve and I worked together to come up with titles for each individual book. We wanted titles that would reflect the vibrancy of color magic. I absolutely love Vivid and Radiant, as well as the book 3 title which will be revealed in the future.

  • What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?

A friend told me “It’s not over until you say it is.” I hear so many aspiring authors ask, “How do I know when I should just give up?” and I asked that same question many times. Only you can decide that. If the fire is still burning within you, keep going.

  • How did publishing your first book change your writing process?

Writing under deadlines definitely changes the process! Before, I would just write when I felt the inspiration kick in. But when you have deadlines to meet it doesn’t quite work that way. I have to make a dedicated effort to sit down and write every day, otherwise it simply won’t happen. It also changed my viewpoint when I realized I was writing something that people were actually going to read. I put a lot more thought into every word.

  • Is your writing space pristine or organized chaos?

It’s definitely not pristine… I’m not sure if I could even call it “organized” chaos. It’s just straight up chaos. I don’t sit and write at a desk every day. I have my laptop and it travels all over the house and yard with me as I follow my kiddos around. I dream of one day having a writing space that’s serene and organized, but that’s not the stage of life I’m in right now.
