How can we understand the miraculous catch of fish in a larger context?

How might the Emmaus Road event hold answers for us when it comes to our own suffering?

Why does a rooster crow as a sign of Peter’s denial?

Excerpt from the Book:

My failures, my despair, my weakness have actually been taken up and pieced together and nothing is lost.  It is all known and used to nurture me and fulfill my purpose as I witness God at work.  Not one piece of my life has been wasted.

Many years ago, I went to a job interview at a very large church for a ministry position. I was dressed to the hilt, as it was a wealthy church, and I wanted to “look the part”. I had an impressive resume, and I plopped it down in front of the Lead Pastor who looked it over casually and listened to me recite my accomplishments. This pastor was somewhat of a legend for his constant emphasis on the love of Jesus. He wouldn’t talk about anything else. After patiently waiting for me to pause he gave me a penetrating look and asked simply “Where are your wounds?”  My suffering, the experiences I wished to discard in my life, had been called out.  I was unprepared to share these broken pieces, but I tried.  I blundered through a few things, at which point he asked, “How do you use them?”  I gave it my best shot and got the job, but it’s taken a lifetime to experience the profound eternal truth that in Christ absolutely nothing is ever lost.  Everything can and will be used for God’s glory.

About the Author

It’s great being a Chaplain at the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, working with our Veterans in addictions and mental health!  Hearing their courageous stories of faith inspires me to write about the healing, transforming power of Christ in whatever ways I can.  I think kids have a special knack for tuning into that spiritual reality that brings hope and meaning to our lives.  I had so much fun updating the Joona Trilogy and making it work for a new generation!  There is so much to write about when it comes to God, who may not always be understandable but who is always desirable.

I am married to a clinical psychologist husband who works out of Burlpres church in Burlingame CA.  We like to fish, play tennis, go to the ocean with our golden retriever and golden doodle, and sail.  Our three grown kids are nearby and we enjoy spending time with them too!  I am a Princeton Seminary graduate and a Boston University School of Theology Doctoral nerd.  I think that is all except I love it when people read what I write and comment.  So please do!
