Excerpt from the Book
Ellie deposited her sister with the other younglings in the front of the bus and headed as far away from them as she could get.
Her best friend Judith was sitting in the very last seat, motioning for her to join. It was an unspoken rule that the oldest students on the bus sat furthest away from the driver. This helped keep teenage conversations private and kept the younger children supervised. Were a youngling to attempt to take a back seat, they would be politely told to move quite far away.
Judith slid over, and Ellie plopped down beside her.
“So, get this,” started Judith, who looked to be nearly bursting to get her onslaught of words out. “This summer, my cousin and his wife had a baby, and I got to hold it. He was the cutest little baby ever. Oh, you should have seen how tiny his fingers were. I could have just died right there and been happy holding him. But then, of course, he had to ruin the moment and throw up on me.” She crumpled her face in revulsion and pushed her palms outward. “So, I handed him back to his mommy. I suppose I’m not ready for kids yet.”
