And as it did, a shape took form, as when plaster for a death mask takes shape over the face of the deceased to reveal the contours after life has departed from it. Thus the dark pool became a visage floating in the air: a face with a misshapen gap for a mouth. A graceless form with lidless eyes mocking in their gaze. A leer and a jeer in the stretch of the cheeks, which seemed in the torpor of rigor mortis as the face grimaced the parody of a smile. The mouth moved.
“Charm has deceived you,” the spirit said. “A pit is dug for those who believe in beauty, young green jay. You know it, and I know it too. What is more, from your own mouth you have confessed that there is much you do not know about this jaguar. But I say there is another thing, too, you are ignorant of: You do not know the motive of this spotted beast who has swept your heart away. How do you know he does not intend to devour you once you return to him? For it is written in the fallen stones lining the path of all flesh: ‘Beauty is the prelude to betrayal.’”
