A richly poetic tale of friendship, courage, and destiny that will awaken the imagination of children and adults alike.
When Oracle, a jaguar from the Yucatán, learns of the dying words of the last jaguar in the Rio Grande Valley, he finds himself on a perilous journey to see a prophecy fulfilled.
To do so he must travel 1,400 miles to Texas and find the Lonely Tree, where his kin spoke an enigma to the heavens as hunters took him down. But the Lonely Tree is in the dangerous realm of Man—and Oracle will need more than his own wisdom and strength to fulfill the task.
Oracle remembers Eden and the naming of the animals; what Adam spoke to the first of each kind. He discovers the animals in the Valley have forgotten their names—as has Man himself.
Can he not only fulfill the prophecy, but help the animals reclaim ancient truths before they are lost forever?
This hope-filled tale explores the quest for courage in a fallen world and how to make the faith journey—and its sacrifices—worthwhile.
Book Excerpt
The dwellers in the suburbs call me pest. I like the Powhatan name better.”
“Do all your acquaintances call you these names?” Oracle asked.
“Oh, not all. Some just call me Patch—oops! Ha! Silly me! Yes, that’s my name. Pace the ocelot calls me that, and so does Force the bobcat. They’re the stewards of the Valley. I’m known to Prickleback the javelina, and he calls me Patch too. The coyotes don’t call anything, but at the same time, I have no enemies among them. Sometimes, the best way to have no enemies is to be called nothing.”
“And where does my nameless fisherman named Patch hail from?”
“I’m from the manplace called Palo Verde Estates. It’s got plenty of hiding places near the resacas, and there are oodles of treasures to borrow.”
“Borrow?”
“Yes! Man has so much that he generously shares it. He leaves ways open for me to collect what he has lost track of.”
“I am sure you have quite a collection of treasures Man has lost track of.”
“Oh yes, indeed I have,” replied Patch, and his eyes brightened in their black mask. But then, as if puzzled by a question posed to himself, he frowned and furrowed his brow and, in his introspection, inadvertently dropped his guard again.
“Some say we raccoons are good at burgling, but we always say we’re good at borrowing. For nothing’s really ours, you know, or yours. I mean no offense to say so, sire, but sooner or later another enjoys what you gather, and lastly the sea or the soil or the air takes it back.
