More from Mimika
Unstick Your Mind was written from a place of deep pain and frustration. Having experienced anxiety, depression and disillusionment for years, I searched for sound biblical advice to help me get out of my mental rut. What I discovered was a lack of useful content that could help turn my compass toward Christ on my journey to mental wellness. After throwing myself into the world of neuroscience, positive psychology and coaching; I emerged with a fresh perspective and a passionate voice to help fellow Christians navigate the amazing miracle of renewing our mind God’s way. The good news is that you CAN change the way you think and completely overhaul your thinking when you focus on renewing your mind using biblical strategies and neuroscience.
Author Interview
- What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your book?
The aspect that surprised me the most when writing my book “Unstick Your Mind” was the lack of content that offered a Christian worldview. There are so many clinical and psychology books written by doctors and experts, which are all good, but they didn’t speak to my spirit. I craved finding a viewpoint that integrates biblical concepts, like how to practically renew the mind, of which I found none. I sought out to create the book and concept I desperately wanted for myself, and it took me on a three year journey of discovery.
- How did you come up with the title for your book?
The title of my book was one of those Aha moments. I had been coaching clients for years and one area that alway came up was the concept of “feeling stuck”. My style of coaching is very future focused, which is why I call myself “The Personal Trainer For Your Mind”. I love the idea of taking action to create results, so my husband and I fell upon the concept of getting “unstuck”. Immediately I knew that was it and “Unstick Your Mind” was born! Now my coaching program, book and brand name are trademarked as “Unstick Your Mind” and I’m running with it.
- Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
I love reading reviews from my readers, both good and bad, because it keeps me in touch with their needs. I come from a marketing background so data and analytics are super important when it comes to making decisions about what to write about. I have a pretty robust marketing engine and book funnel set up that asks readers to review every time they buy one of my books. It’s so encouraging to know that all the hard work of writing a book pays off when you read things like how my book has changed their life! I’m so honored when the feedback shows how God speaks to people through my words and their lives are never the same. To me that is a testimony to be celebrated!
- How do you overcome writer’s block? Do you have any advice for others in finding their process to overcome it?
Personally I don’t have issues with writer’s block and what to write about when I create blocks in my schedule. When I block out time in my calendar to write, it’s a non-negotiable appointment with myself. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not a writing machine, I do have days when I’m staring at the page in frustration. But what I’ve found is if I plan a two hour block and say to myself; “you’re not doing anything else but writing for the next two hours” I get things done. I go to a neutral place like a coffee shop, put my phone in airplane mode, and don’t check email or social media. It takes discipline and practice to get yourself in the flow, and I like to think of it like brain hacking. You decide in advance what you’re going to do, then there is no negotiating with the two year old having a hissing fit in my mind when she doesn’t “feel” like it! I call it “tricking” myself when I tell myself “just write for two hours then you can reward yourself with a social media break”. Now it’s easier to get in a flow and writing becomes effortless when I give up fighting with the toddler who wants to sabotage my time, my thinking and my productivity.
- Do you read the genre you write? Why or why not?
I’m always reading books in the genre I write so I can be informed of what is being presented to my potential reader. Maybe it’s from my marketing training, but I don’t like to waste my time writing a book that won’t sell. I start with a seed of an idea then go to work researching everything about the topic, genre, other authors, categories and keywords. I’m definitely a planner, not a panster, so I need to know what I’m writing and for whom.
- What is the most valuable piece of advice you’ve been given about writing?
The biggest lesson I learnt from a literary agent was “don’t write what you want to write, but write for what readers want to read”. I thought I was so original, wanting to write my memoir of my life story, but I will never forget her brutal honesty. She said “unless you’re someone famous memoirs don’t sell”. That hit me in the heart, but I realized she was right. There is always a way to combine my love for a topic by presenting it in a way that readers will actually buy. After all, readers are thinking “what is in it for me” and “how is this going to help me” so I like to keep abreast of what sells and tailor my ideas to fit the genre.
