About the Author
Mary Pat Johns’ writing career began once she retired from teaching speech and writing. She has written devotions for an online publication, had short stories published by Chicken Soup for the Soul, and wrote a column for the Victoria Advocate, a local newspaper.
Countin’ On Jesse, her first novel debuted in 2023, and books 2 & 3 of the Valiant series, Lovin’ On Red and Glitter and the Grouch released in 2024. God put it in her heart to tell stories of brave veterans and their reintegration into civilian life after suffering the traumas of war.
She writes Christian romance because when we see life through the hope of Christ’s sacrifice, we find that happily ever after is God’s idea.
More from Mary Pat
The ending of a series is always bittersweet. I will miss the characters, but I remind myself they are in a good place. Kind of like my grown children. They have their own lives to live, and I’m not as “hands-on” as I was during their formative years. If you weren’t around for the beginning of this series, no worries. Each book tells its own story. In the meantime, stay tuned. I have other stories to write. That said, I probably won’t wander too far from Valiant—the strong, safe place where it all began.
Author Interview
- What is your favorite genre of books? Why?
I write contemporary romance and enjoy reading it, but it’s not always my go-to. I love romantic suspense and historical romance. As a romantic suspense reader, I lean toward a strong romantic slant. Though I love a fast-moving plot, if the action scenes are something I have a hard time relating to, I’ll put the book down. And I adore the various settings of historical romance.
- Are you a one project at a time author or do you have multiple projects going at once?
I prefer writing one book at a time, but the marketing responsibilities are ongoing. This week, I’m prepping for a book release, writing a blurb, working on my word count goal for a Christmas novella, writing a proposal for a new series, and scheduling social media posts.
- How do you relax after a long day of writing?
If the weather is nice, I’ll sit outside and visit with my husband. Other times, I’ll play a board game, read a good book, or watch a movie. I like to putter around in the kitchen too.
- Where do you find your greatest inspiration?
It can come from several sources, but my greatest inspiration is when God whispers in my ear that he will provide everything I need to get the story written. Another way is when my husband or someone close to me shares an encouraging word. I recently attended a writer’s retreat. It was so helpful to be around others who understand the challenges of the writing life. Also, I’m a voracious reader. Almost every book I read provides some nugget of truth I can chew on.
- Do you have extensive outlines when writing, or do you write a book as you go?
I don’t outline extensively. Instead, I’ll start with a couple of plot points and see what happens. Soon after the beginning is fairly solid, I’ll spend time fleshing out the other plot points. It always stimulates ideas that anchor the story. But what happens in between the plot points is always a surprise, even to me.
