Spinning. Turning flax to fine linen thread for her family’s weaving business keeps Betha’s hands occupied all day, but it’s the concerns spinning in her heart that never truly rest. How can she give her nephew Henry a secure, loving home when his father remains indifferent? How can she guide the boy who calls her “Ma” to know and follow the Lord for himself? And when past secrets and future changes collide, will she lose Henry altogether?
Colm Gallagher is passionate about teaching boys using innovative educational methods. But is his kind and thorough instruction enough if he is not allowed to give his students the ultimate truth of God’s Word? Confronted by his student Henry Young and the boy’s lovely but determined aunt, Colm considers if he has allowed practical considerations to outweigh his deepest-held beliefs.
Even as Betha and Colm are drawn to each other, family loyalties, financial pressures, and personal uncertainties push them further apart. Will the threads of their lives unravel or become knit together into something stronger?
Weaving linen is her family’s legacy. Weaving roots of truth and grace is her calling.
Book Excerpt
As far as Betha’s da was concerned, those who had never stepped foot on the ancient land of Hibernia were lesser than. Which had always confused her, seeing as he was the one who brought Seamus and their mother to America before Betha was born.
“Betha Young,” she murmured in response.
Mr. Gallagher released her hand and leaned back against the desk. “How old are you, Mr. Young?”
“Almost eleven, sir.”
As if Betha needed to be reminded that he was growing up too fast. Especially when his birthday was still five months away.
“You’ve been in school before?”
“Yes, sir, in New York.”
Betha supposed the teacher had to ask that one, as the school serviced poor Scotch-Irish neighborhoods, but at least he worded it with the assumption that Henry had. Henry stood tall and brave, already so anxious to impress his new teacher.
Mr. Gallagher—or was it Colm, since he’d added that name just for her?—rounded the desk to rifle through his pile of papers. “I could place you in the level you were in in New York to start with, or if you’re willing to undergo a more exacting evaluation, I’ll place you in separate reading, writing, and arithmetic levels according to your abilities. That way you can simply continue your education from your current place.”
