Legacy. I don’t think many people think about legacy. At least not until they start facing the end of their lives. So, what is legacy? One definition I found is something handed down from one generation to the next. I like this definition because it can be so many things. It can be wisdom, stewardship, an example of a life lived with integrity, leaving the world a better place, peace, and even hope. Perhaps another way to say it is legacy is living with the future of the next generation in mind.

The quote up above is from the last book in my Viking-inspired fantasy series, The Nordic Wars. In Winter’s Dawn, the leaders of the Nordic people are facing two impossible choices, both that will most likely cost their nation everything. Then the end comes. Discouraged, Brighid feels all hope is lost. But Gurmund reminds her that even if they lose everything, and their people cease to be no more, it still mattered how they finished.

They would leave hope and light for the next generation.

This is how I want to live. I once told my husband that I don’t think we will ever know the legacy we leave behind, because it will be spoken about after we are gone. But the choices I make today and the life I live, will determine the ending I leave behind for others to read. I want that ending to be full of hope and light so that when the next generation faces darkness, they will remember they are not alone and those who went before them.

Author Interview

• What is your favorite genre of books? Why?

Probably obvious by what I write, but my favorite genre is fantasy and science fiction. My father was a huge fan and he passed down that love to me. I love reading about vivid and impossible worlds, going on adventures, and saving the world.

• Are you a one project at a time author or do you have multiple projects going at once?

I’ll sometimes have multiple ideas going on, but when it comes to writing, I work on one project at a time. If ideas for other stories show up, I write them down and place them in a folder on my computer to look at later so I can focus on the story I’m working on now.

• How has your life experience helped in your writing journey?

My faith informs my writing. Questions I’m asking, thoughts I’m pondering, things I’m going through usually seem to end up in my stories. Recently in my Viking-inspired fantasy series, The Nordic Wars, I was going through the hardest years of my life and faith. The pain and questions I had I wrote about through my characters. And as my characters found healing and hope, I also found the same things.

• Where do you find your greatest inspiration?

I find my inspiration in a couple places: other stories, music, and daydreaming. Reading, watching, or experiencing the stories of others feeds my own creativity. Other times, hearing a piece of music will move me and cause a scene to appear inside my head. And of course, daydreaming. There is nothing like the monotony of washing dishes or folding laundry to make me start thinking of a story.

• Do you remember the first book you read? What sort of impact did it make on you?

One of the earliest stories I remember reading is The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. My mother started reading the story to us at night, one chapter at a time. I couldn’t stand not knowing what was going to happen next, so I found the book and hid in the corner of my bedroom and devoured the book in one day. I discovered I had a voracious appetite for reading, especially anything fantastical and not even the local library could keep up with enough books for me to read.
