Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown, follows a young boy on a joyously affirming adventure that celebrates all shades of brown, from the darkest to the lightest.

From new school desks to freckles and moles, from fresh pastries to cedar canoes, brown is everywhere around us. God created and used brown to color the giant California redwoods, the Grand Canyon walls, busy beavers building dams, great horned owls hoo-hooing, and his image-bearers.

Everywhere that I go
I’m searching to see
something wonderfully, marvelously
brown—just like you and like me!

Illustrated by Pura Belpré Honor Award artist Sara Palacios and written by Xochitl Dixon, Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown takes kids on a tour of the U.S. to seek and find all the brilliant and beautiful shades of brownfrom ivory to ebonythat God created. Readers will be encouraged to love the skin tone God chose for them as they observe how the spectacular shades of brown are reflected in their communities and the world around them.

Author Q&A

  1. Would you share how you worked with your illustrator and how the illustrations complement the text?

I shared some notes with the illustrator of Different Like Me, but wasn’t allowed to connect with her until after the book was published. However, I worked closely with my publisher and the illustrators of What Color is God’s Love? and Wonderfully, Marvelously Brown. I prayed for the illustrators and met with them to share my vision for the book. I requested diversity of skin tone, body type, and hair type. I specifically described how I wanted several characters to be portrayed in an effort to combat stereotypes. I also have a list of disabilities I would like represented in my books. The illustrators cannot accommodate my long list of desired traits to create the diversity I envision. However, they have always tried to do their best to include as many of my requests as possible. I still have some traits I am praying will be included in future books.
